At these times, our body sends us signals in the form of stiffness, which, if ignored, quickly turns into chronic discomfort.
A lack of movement and physical activity is not rest for the body. In fact, for the neck, it is often more exhausting than moderate activity. Our bodies are designed to be in motion, and a static posture (especially in front of a screen) is the main culprit behind modern chronic pain in the neck and upper back. Poor posture, especially when working at a computer, also puts strain on the spine and neck.
Physical activity also carries its own risks if performed incorrectly. Intense exertion during sports, weightlifting, or even making sudden movements without warming up first are often the cause of injuries and muscle strains. Some people experience pain on the side of their neck, while in others, overexertion manifests as pain in the front of the neck.


Diseases and medical conditions
- Cervical osteochondrosis – Over time, the intervertebral discs gradually lose their water content, leading to thinning and a loss of their natural elasticity. This creates conditions for the subsequent development of cervical spondylosis. Pay attention to whether you have symptoms such as neck pain radiating to the shoulders and upper limbs, limited neck mobility – especially in the morning – and numbness in the hands.
- Cervical spondylosis – This condition is also known as osteoarthritis of the neck. It is associated with wear and tear of the vertebrae, joints, and discs in the neck region due to aging. This condition affects over 85% of people over the age of 60. In addition to severe neck pain, it can also manifest as stiffness, reduced mobility, headaches, and sometimes bone spurs (osteophytes).
- Osteophytes in the neck or bone spurs in the neck – Pain caused by bone spurs in the neck is also not uncommon. These are actually bony growths that the body forms as a protective response to chronic wear and tear of the vertebrae and discs. When the natural shock absorbers in the spine wear down, friction between the bone surfaces increases, prompting the body to build these structures for additional stability. In addition to pain, patients often experience numbness in the hands, limited mobility, headaches and dizziness.
- Cervical disc herniation – Every intervertebral disc has a soft, gel-like interior and a firmer outer layer. In a disc herniation, part of the soft core protrudes through a tear in the outer layer. This can put pressure on nearby nerve roots or the spinal cord. The result in some patients is severe neck pain that may radiate to the shoulder, arm, and fingers. Sometimes there is numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arm.
- Cervical radiculopathy – This condition occurs when a nerve in the neck is pinched or inflamed. Since these nerves are responsible for sensation and movement in the upper limbs, symptoms are often felt far from the source of the problem. It most commonly presents with shooting pain, numbness (pins and needles), and muscle weakness in the shoulder or arm.
